Nate Fuller

Game systems programmer. I build the parts of a game that have to be frame-perfect: rollback netcode, deterministic engines, input and audio.

I spent nearly four years on Idol Showdown at Besto Games. Now I work on distributed block storage at AWS, and I’m open to new work and consulting.

Work

Idol Showdown: two fighters trade hits in front of a torii gate on a bamboo shrine stage.

Idol Showdown

A free, fan-made hololive fighting game with rollback netcode. It has more than 1.2 million downloads and a 9/10 rating on Steam.

As a systems programmer at Besto Games I built input handling on SDL and the Wwise audio integration, worked on the UI, wrote debugging and tracking tools inside the Unity Editor, and made a bug tracker that sent designers’ reports straight into our CI/CD pipeline.

Guessing
Corrected
  • Confirmed input
  • Predicted input
  • Re-simulated
  • Late input arrives
The last five frames ran on a guess of the other player’s input. When their real input for the first of those frames arrives, the game rewinds to the last confirmed frame and re-simulates all five before drawing the next one.

BestoNet

Open-source rollback netcode for Unity, written in C# for Idol Showdown. It replaced the game’s GGPO integration to get rid of relay latency and multi-frame rollback bugs.

I worked on speculative frame saving, input prediction, keeping both peers’ clocks in step, and a 7-frame input buffer that rides out lost and out-of-order packets.

Experience

  1. 2025 to now

    Amazon Web Services

Software development engineer, Elastic Block Store

I work on the EBS Durability Engine in C++. I designed a metadata sync pipeline for replication across availability zones, moved intent deletion off the write path into async garbage collection, built the metrics and alerting for the B-Tree Clone rollout, and tracked down flaky integration tests caused by memory-safety bugs and races.

  2. 2020 to 2024

    Besto Games

    Systems programmer, Idol Showdown

I built input, audio, UI and editor tools for a fighting game with 1.2 million downloads, and worked on its rollback netcode.

  3. 2021 to 2023

    Fisher College

    B.S. in Software Engineering

  4. 2018 to 2020

    Butte College

  5. 2012 to 2018

    United States Air Force

    Human resource manager

I processed performance reports for 4,100 people and handled more than $32,000 a week in special pay inquiries. I earned the Air Force Achievement Medal and was picked from 500+ candidates to train and mentor 180 university students at Maxwell Air Force Base.
